Best Wife Friendly Fishing Adventure

Where is the best Alaskan fishing lodge to bring my wife? Many guys ask this question, but most lodges are too rustic, remote, or ridiculously  expensive. Well, don’t worry, I have the solution to your problem, Bon Chovy Fishing Charters in Vancouver, British Columbia. That’s right, you can enjoy some of the best Salmon fishing, crabbing, shrimping and even throw in some massive Sturgeon all within the comforts of a modern city.  Catch a 25 lb Chinook in the morning and enjoy dinner and a show that night. Bon Chovy Fishing Charters will set you up with first-class accommodations at the Granville Island Hotel, from where you can walk to the dock to catch your charter. Want to fly your catch home? They will arrange to have your fillets processed and ready to take as a carry on for your flight home. Best of all, with the US to Canadian Dollar exchange rate you will save about 25 percent. It’s a win-win! Let’s check it out.

During the summer months Chinook and Coho salmon are available often within a 10 minute boat ride of the dock.  Sockeye Salmon also prowl these waters as well as Pink Salmon every odd-numbered year ( don’t ask me why).  Sockeye, though delicious, are not always permitted for fishing. Catching a two-fish limit of these hard-fighting, great-eating fish is not uncommon on a 5 hour half-day trip. The crew will fillet your catch for you right there, and if you like, take it to a fish processor for your flight home.

Spring Salmon fishing is done a little farther out, in the Georgia Straits and along the Gulf Islands. Traps for Dungeness Crabs and Prawns can be dropped at this time with amazing results. Plan a multi-day trip and target some Halibut, Lingcod or Rockfish. Winter months consistently produce big Chinook as well as quality Crab and Prawn. Halibut can be fished after February along the Southern Gulf Islands.

White Sturgeon, the largest freshwater game fish in North America, are waiting to challenge your strength in the Fraser River, a short drive from Vancouver. These prehistoric-looking beasts, ranging from 4 ft to over 10 ft, will jump clear out of the river and give you the fight of your life. An 8 ft White Sturgeon is over 44 years old and weighs over 250 lbs. Hooking one this size is fairly common on this part of the Fraser River. These magnificent fish are all catch and release. Please be sure to add this to your trip. You will not be sorry.

Bon Chovy Charters can set you up with first-class accommodations at the Granville Island Hotel which is a short walk to the dock. My wife loved it there. Be sure to ask for a water view room. This boutique hotel has its own bar and restaurant with amazing views. It is a short walk to all the restaurants and shops on Granville Island. You can catch a the Aquabus Ferry for a short ride to Yaletown or English bay.

Granville Island is full of excellent restaurants and shopping along the waterfront. The Public Market has  every type of cuisine you could possibly want. Grab a coffee and donut at Lee’s Donuts before your fishing charter. Stop for fried clams and a sourdough bowl of clam chowder when you get back. The Keg is a great restaurant for an excellent steak. Be sure to ask for their “3 cheese butter” for their fresh bread. Catch the ferry  to Yaletown and eat at the Flying Pig or head to English Bay for an awesome sunset and many more great spots to eat.

The Granville Brewery is a popular spot on the Island. There are many pubs in English Bay and Gastown too. Catch a play at “Bard on the Beach.”  Plan your trip for the Honda Celebration of Light in late July. This is basically the “World Series of Fireworks.” Bard on the Beach has a package for a play,  Salmon dinner, and reserved seating for the firework show.  We did this and it was a blast!  Catch a Canucks hockey game or a BC Lions CFL football game.

You can rent bikes and ride around Stanley Park, walk along Kitsilano Beach, check out the Maritime Museum or take a drive to walk the Capilano Suspension Bridge or ride the tram. Van Dusen Botanical Gardens and Queen Elizabeth Park are both beautiful and a great way to spend an afternoon.

So, as you can clearly see,  there are plenty of things to do with your spouse. Wives that don’t want to fish will find fun things to do and couples can enjoy all the city has to offer together at a relative bargain. Make your plans and contact Bon Chovy Fishing Charters to make reservations.
